Commissioner Freeman Talks O&C Land Management to REAL Oregon Delegates
(Douglas County, Ore.) Douglas County Commissioner Tim Freeman spent some time earlier this week educating delegates from the 2021/22 REAL Oregon (Resource Education & Agricultural Leadership Program) about our unique O&C (Oregon and California Railroad) Forest Lands, and the tremendous impact Federal management of the O&C Forest Lands have on the economies of eighteen of our Oregon Counties. The presentation took place earlier this week in the conference room at the Roseburg Holiday Inn, as a part of the groups three-day tour of Douglas and Lane Counties. Commissioner Freeman was joined by former Douglas County Commissioner, Doug Robertson, who in retirement continues to advocate for and deliver educational presentations on effective O&C Forest Land management. The pair have been presenting a similar presentation to the REAL Oregon leadership group and many other groups for years in order to raise the consciousness of the great economic importance of proper forest management of the O&C Forest Lands. Commissioner Freeman dedicates a large portion of his time to work on the forefront of these kinds of policy decisions and discussions that directly impact the citizens of Douglas County.

REAL Oregon is an annual leadership and professional development program that exposes a cross-section of individuals who live and work in Oregon’s natural resource communities to the diversity of Oregon’s geography, economy and cultures through a series of five statewide educational sessions.* In order to expose these professional delegates to the diversity of Oregon’s natural resource communities, they hold monthly, three-day meetings at five different locations across the state each program year. The program begins in November each year and concludes in March the following year, with the cohort meeting one time per month. The Roseburg/Eugene combo stop was the second of the five this year for the group, as they already toured Klamath Falls in November, and plan to tour Newport in January, Salem in February and Ontario in March 2022. The group has visited and had delegates from Douglas County several times over the years. *Background information adapted from the REAL Oregon website.
